Gradient Wotuo (swirl pattern) Scarf
Miao batik or la ran (蜡染), from Guizhou, China, is a wax-resist dyeing technique that has been around since the Qin and Han dynasties. Although this craft has been added to the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list, it remained largely a local tradition and incorporates many traditional motifs to this day - for example, the swirl or "wotuo" pattern in Miao dialect, is used to commemorate their ancestors.
The scarf on display incorporates this "wotuo" pattern and is carefully hand-painted and hand-dyed. The pattern is drawn onto the fabric with melted beeswax which acts as a dye resistant during the natural indigo dyeing process. This piece is also very versatile, as you may wear it as a shawl, regular scarf or head scarf.

When we talked about the intangible cultural heritage behind the pieces, it touched and resonated with many...My boss was so in love with the Miao embroidery (jacket), haha, she even wore it on the same day!

I learned so much and truly enjoyed the hands-on experience of creating. I also want to say how much I admire the entire SlowMaking brand - your story and vision are incredibly inspiring and deeply resonate with me. The art of slowing down and creating seems to be fading, at least in the Canadian communities I’m part of. It’s rare to find creative communities like this here in Canada, so I’m grateful to have come across your work. I love how you’re keeping traditional and cultural art alive while bringing it into new spaces. I’ll be following along and cheering you on as you continue to grow!

I’ve adored SlowMaking for their ethos and how they strive to protect the beautiful works of artisans from generations past. My most favourite piece is the Batik rabbit for the intricate dye pattern and its moving limbs. How adorable. It brings such joy to my heart!
